In an age when photographic lighting has gotten cheaper and cheaper, it's rare to find a product that has the quality of pro gear, without the price tag! This, in my opinion, is one of those products, and I hope you find this review helpful in your search for good lighting! SMDV sent me an evaluation copy of this Softbox for reviewing purposes, on the understanding that I would write an honest review of my findings.

IN THE BOX
In the box, the first thing you will find is a very handy bag to store the Softbox. It is reasonably well made, and definitely does a good job of making this easy to store. Inside the bag is the diffuser, the speedring that mounts the diffuser, the adjustable light bracket that you attach to the included tilting bracket, a spare spigot (that also has a standard tripod thread, the shoe mount to mount your flash and a couple of spare rods in case your break one. Now that may sound complicated, but the included instructions do a really good job of explaining everything.

CONSTRUCTION/QUALITY
As I mentioned, I really was impressed by the quality of everything. If something isn't made of metal on this thing, it is made of high-quality plastic (none of this cheap stuff that cracks). The rods feel very strong, and while I felt a little trepidation pushing them in to place, everything clicked in nicely without any signs of problems. The Softbox diffuser is made of a nicely durable fabric (perhaps an industrial nylon?), and is much better than several budget diffusers I have used in the past. By the way, when you are taking it down using the quick-release mechanism, don't let the loud pop scare you! I thought I had broken it at first, and then realized that if you closed an umbrella under that much tension, it would probably sound the same!

VERSATILITY
I wanted to mention the versatility of this Softbox. The included spigot is very handy, allowing you to mount the diffuser to a standard tripod or a light stand (worked nicely with these light stands). This is great if you don't have any light stands, as most photographers (even casual hobbyists) will have a tripod. The included tilt head does a good job of allowing you to direct the light, although I would say this is the one area that could be improved (mechanism feels a little shaky). The bracket it comes with can be attached to a standard hotshoe, meaning you can put this on an L-Bracket (example) if you feel inclined. In my line of work (wedding photography) it's a little imposing, but you may find it's just what you need! I was able to fit my flash as well as a radio receiver without any height issues, as the height of the opening for the diffuser is adjustable.

QUALITY OF LIGHT
Now this is what really counts! A lighting accessory can be incredibly made, but if it doesn't give nice light, there's no point in owning it! The SMDV Diffuser does its job very well. I took it on a family portraits shoot this weekend and was very pleased with the diffused light. It is perfect for portraiture, giving an even light that doesn't cast too many shadows (obviously you need to know how to place one!). Paired with a good flash, a couple of these in the right spot will give you perfect portraits every time! I even managed to use it for a group of four people, so don't think you are limited.

I would highly recommend this as a step up from some of the cheaper softboxes out there. It is made in a way that I believe it will be durable (and will update to talk on this), and the light provided is really top-notch. If you don't have the budget for the pro gear (or don't feel like spending the extra money on something that won't be much better) I recommend you give this a shot!
