This is a great phone for someone with hearing or visual disabilities. This is why I purchased it. I initially purchased the Uniden 2998, which I really LOVE! However, it didn't have the feature of "talking keys", as this one does. The Uniden is more user friendly, I think for someone who can't see or understand little icons. The Uniden actually has words such as "okay" and in green letters "talk" or red letters "ends" calls. The buttons on the Uniden are nice and large along with the viewer screen and the buttons are very easy to push. The Clear Sounds is a little more difficult to use, or see the buttons, but better than other regular phones. It has nice features like a large light for incoming calls, big buttons on the base, and viewer screen. You can program your phone book to "say" who it is that is calling, and it is very clear to hear this voice. There are big buttons you can 1 button dial for 8 of your phone book numbers and a big red button to program into 911. Another nice feature is if the phone is left off of the hook, which my father has done multiple times, and then when you try to call you get a busy signal, and start to worry, where this phone automatically goes back "on the hook" if no conversation is held for 8 min. You can put in batteries into the base, so that if the power goes out, the phone will still work. My father refuses to get a cell phone, so this is a great feature if he needs to call in an emergency and the power is out. The programming of your phone book is VERY lengthy, because you have to enter each person into the base and each handset. The Uniden automatically transferred the phonebook from the base to each handset. Also, the base only holds 30 phonebook lists, and the handsets hold 60, I believe. The Uniden held over 60 on both base and handsets. I ended up keeping the Uniden and purchasing the Clear Sounds for him.
One MAIN point, is, I would strongly recommend NOT purchasing ANYTHING from ANTONLINE.COM through Amazon or from their website. The first Clear Sounds phone I purchased actually came defective. One of the "back" keys did not work at all. And because Amazon does not ship this themselves, it is shipped thru ANTONLINE.COM, you are bound by ANTONLINE.COM's return policy...which STINKS!!! You first have to request an RMA, which first has to get approved. Then once you receive an approved RMA you have 10 days to package the product in the same way it was packaged in the manufacturer's untorn package. Well, I had gone through all of the trouble of programming each of the units, until I got to the 2nd handset which was defective. Then I had to deprogram everything, and try and put all the pieces back correctly, or they can refuse it. If they don't get the product back within 10 days from the time you receive your RMA they will refuse the package. They won't send out a return shipping label. YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THE RETURN SHIPPING PLUS INSURANCE!!!! I AM NOW FIGHTING WITH ANTONLINE.COM TO GET MY $15.20 BACK FOR THIS RETURN SHIPPING. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!!! JUST DO A GOOGLE ON COMPLAINTS ABOUT ANTONLINE.COM, AND YOU'LL KNOW WHAT I MEAN. I told them I should start my own shipping company and only deal with companies like theirs, and I'll be a multimillionaire. It makes me wonder if UPS doesn't own part of or have a financial interest in ANTONLINE.COM...Something to think about. Anyway, I do like the product, I will be curious to see how my dad likes it since he is considered legally blind from macrodegeneration. But, actually, I think I will buy him a Uniden, as well, program his numbers in that one too, ship it out to him, and let him choose which one he likes best, and finds easier for him to use. The one he doesn't choose, maybe I can find a likely buyer on EBay or just give to Goodwill.
