Alpen Waterproof 15-45x60 Spotting Scope 728 Review

I was hoping this scope would have a wide field/bright image suitable for astronomical use, as a grab-n-go alternative to lugging out the 10" instrument. Maybe I am spoiled by astronomical optics that can provide a 2 or 3 degree field plus large aperture light gathering.
Alas, the 60mm objective and the narrow FOV of a spotting scope are just not enough for such use.
But - I will attest to this little scope's very fine optical and mechanical quality. The field is flat (in focus) all the way to the edge. Only a slight purple tinge at the periphery at 45x. Remarkable for a simple achromat lens system like this one. I could see the veins in a resting honey bee's wings at 50 yards. The focus knob is a one finger, butter-smooth feature intuitively positioned on top of the tube. The variable power eyepiece is non-removable, but operates smoothly. Coatings look very good. I would suggest that most of these 60 power scopes with 60mm objective lens are just exaggerating their functionality at 60X. In my experience, 1X power per mm lens diameter is unrealistic except in the most expensive optics; the image will be too dark, and a strain on the optics quality.
45X is the highest useable magnification at the 60mm lens size, IMO, and this Alpen confirms it.
This is probably the finest little scope near this price range for sighting in guns and for wildlife or general terrestrial use I have ever used. Looks good, feels solid and the rubber shell feels good. Nice carry bag too, full coverage eyepiece cap, and an all-metal shorty tripod with 1/4-20 photo-style bolt. Sweet deal. But ouch, they just jacked up the price!
