Since this kit is priced towards beginners, you might hear several people complaining about the muslins that Cowboy Studio includes, especially for being "too thin". Well, the usual points apply: this is actually a great feature since it means you can shine lights through the material from behind for very creative effects, and otherwise it's probably assumed that you're not setting up in front of a bright window and are not shooting on a beach, etc. Clearly, the way to go for this type of thing is with a giant roll of paper, but these have issues, particularly their giant, non-portable size & storage situations. If you are going portable, there's no way you're bringing, say, canvas with you, and you're left with all the types of cloth that are less rugged than canvas and surprise, somewhat see-through (the key advantage however being you are actually able to bring the background to your destination). In fact, I'd wager that the only time you'll see a "proper" opaque (paper) background is in a rented studio space (or possibly an extremely upscale dorm room).

And I suppose due to a legal requirement enforced by the Bags & Luggage Guild, any zipper-based carrier must be just a few millimeters smaller than whatever it is supposed to contain, so that even small particles of dust that you might accidentally get on the ends of the stands will prevent them from fully fitting into the carrying case again without performing several Feats of Strength. C'est la vie.

The stands in this kit are not air cushioned, but otherwise great for their weight / price.

And that brings us to ... the lights. I haven't talked to Cowboy Studio yet, but I can only assume that there was a typo or oversight in the Inventory Control department and somewhere, a Cowboy Studio executive is returning from a golf trip and saying into a tiny Cowboy Studio branded cell phone at volume, "Wait a minute, you're shipping 30w bulbs with that kit? That's like, 'night-lite' brightness -- are we decorating the kid's room or selling studio equipment here?" So, much like the plastic prop computer components you see in furniture stores, the supplied bulbs are an incredible, life-like simulation of what it could be like if actual, light-emitting elements were separately purchased and installed into the fixtures. CS may want to save some money on future versions of this kit and simply include pieces of cardboard saying "Light!" on them, with a list of good bulb suppliers potentially near you.

What you're really getting then are two additional, light-weight stands (these are far flimsier than the stands for the background but still serviceable) and two white shoot-through umbrellas, which you can immediately put some value-priced monolights on and be ready to shoot.

One final word. You'll want to come up with your own technique for removing the wrinkles from the backgrounds, even the black one. For reasons unknown, I happen to have a steam cleaner type device, which works like a huge iron and can flatten out a background in a reasonable amount of time (though you have to wait for it to dry). Getting that last inch of "flatness" is easier with some clips (sold separately) which will allow you to pull the background tight against various parts of the stands.

So there you go -- this background was reasonably priced, lightweight, and was immediately put into service for a remote photoshoot that went great primarily because of it's inclusion. Share & enjoy.
