The Philips Fidelio M1s are high-quality but understated headphones designed expressly for use with mobile devices with controls on the cable and no need for an amplifier.

They are extremely appealing visually with nice proportions and high-quality materials handled well: fine-grain black leather, sturdy grey satin-finished aluminum alloy, frank expression of different components as well as connectors such as screws and stitching, braided sheathing on the cable, and subtle markings. The video on Amazon doesn't do justice to the way they look and feel in the hand.

The ear cups and their brackets both swivel to adjust for good fit and to lay flat for storage. The ratcheting mechanism of the headband is impressive: the most precise of any headphones I own, with an incredibly satisfying clicking sound. The headband even has incised scales--and oddly enough, they use fractions of an inch rather than metric units! Philips must have changed this particularly for the U.S. market and it was thoughtful if unnecessary.

The headband and earpads are adequately but not generously cushioned with foam. I normally don't like wearing on-ear headphones but these are quite comfortable: the headband doesn't exert too much pressure, the foam never bottoms out, and they create noticeably less buildup of heat and moisture than similar models. The leather of the headband and the imitation leather of the earpieces are almost indistinguishable.

The only quibble I have with the physical design is that the detachable cable fits onto a little non-replaceable pigtail instead of directly into the headset. Given the thought that obviously went into every detail, there must be a reason for this, though I can't figure it out.

The audio quality is excellent for closed back, on-ear, foam-padded headphones intended for use with mobile devices, engineered for emphasis on bass but certainly not unpleasantly so.

Midrange tones seem quite accurate and are very satisfactory. The treble is satisfactory but not sparkly or particularly exciting. The bass is also very good, neither punchy nor muddy, but the very low bass does lack some detail when the volume is pushed up too high for comfort and safety.

The soundstage is above average for this type of headphone with flat foam-padded ear pieces and I am even a bit impressed by the depth if not the width in comparison to the other audio aspects.

I used these walking around, sitting in the park, and even made a point of taking the subway down to Chinatown just for testing and I really enjoyed listening to music with them when out and about. They do an excellent job of competing with a noisy environment by keeping sound from leaking in (or out), they are comfortable, I don't feel silly wearing them, and the sound they produce is enjoyable. Even without noise cancellation, they would be good enough for air travel. I haven't noticed any interference from friction on the cable.

Overall, the Philip Fidelio M1's sound quality and comfort are very good to excellent for a headphone for use with mobile devices but they understandably lack some of the liveliness and excitement of open-back, over-the-ear headphones that would make them the best choice for listening to music at home.
