Alpen Shasta Ridge #393 Pink 10X42 Review

I bought these Alpen binocs for my wife (who wouldn't have guessed! However, honestly, as their optics turned out to be really good, I would love to walk around with them at some birding session just to shake up the all too green/black binocular-community a little!). I paid about 120Euro. I think Amazon.de had a sale on them at the time.
I have made some simple field comparisons with my own two 10x binoculars: a pair of Leica 10x25 Ultravid, and a pair of Bushnell 10x36 Ultra-HD. The sharpness is similar betwen the three. The Leicas have significantly better sharpness to the edge of the view (but instead they have an annoyingly narrow field of view in comparison, which makes them less useful when following a bird in flight). The Leica and Bushnell have similar color rendition. The Alpen are a little bit paler, but definitely not disturbing and also not noticeable if not subject to direct comparison like this. The Bushnell have a fantastic field of view for a pair of 10x, but the Alpen are about the same. It is astonishing for a pair of so cheap binocs! The Alpen are also comparable to the Bushnell in low-light capacity. It seems the depth of view is a little bit narrower in the Alpen than the Bushnell, but not in any way disturbing. I also own an old pair of Zeiss 7x42 Dialyt T*P* (Ooh, how I love my old faithful friends!). Although difficult to compare with the 10x binocs the Zeiss are as good, and even beat the more modern Bushnell and Alpen with regard to the anti-reflex treatment (but again, this is not disturbing in the Alpen and Bushnell). The Zeiss and Leica are brands many times more expensive than the Bushnell and Alpen, and, of course, better. But for these particular models the difference is not so huge to motivate the difference in price for someone that wants to hold on to the money a bit. Note, however, that the compared binoculars are quite different: the Zeiss are 7x, and the Leica are pocket-sized. The Bushnells are the ones most similar to the Alpen, but with 36mm and ED glass.
Mechanically the Alpen seem robust and precise. They are relatively light-weight and small for a pair of 10x42 (they are definitely bigger than my Leica and Bushnell, but that is expected, of course)
The Alpen Pink are the same model as the Alpen Shasta Ridge, but of different color. Before buying the Alpen Pink I tried a pair of the Shasta Ridge in a shop in the US and compared with a pair of Nikon Monarch. I then realised that the Alpen are really good for the price. Then when I saw the Pink model for a good price I knew I had found the perfect gift for my wife. The pink color makes them fun, but they are definitely also high-quality optics. She is very happy with them.
