CowboyStudio 320 Watt Photo Studio Monolight Strobe/Flash Umbrella Lighting Kit - 2 Studio Flash/Strobe, 2 Umbrellas Review

I'm normally an available light photographer, but occasionally need extra illumination. This kit fits the bill nicely. The stands are light but sturdy, and the strobes work well. There's nothing special about the umbrellas; they work fine. I prefer the white "shoot-through" type, but the relective one has it's uses. I actually purchased a few more umbrellas (larger ones) to go along with these. But that's just me.

The main thing that drew me to the CowboyStudio strobes is that they have a power dial on the back. If you've shopped around, you know that there are plenty of fixed-power strobes in this price range. But a fixed power strobe is extrememly limiting in setting up your shots. You can only adjust the exposure on your camera (potentially messing up the ambient light levels) or move the strobe closer to further away from your subject. So I'm glad that Cowboy offers an alternative.

The one downside is their implementation of the power dial. There are markings on it, but they don't correspond to anything useful. And the dial is not linear by either light level or exposure. I calculated the light output (by examining the histogram in my camera) at various points in the dial: 1/16 is at the low end (marked) and 1/1 is full (marked). The halfway point of the dial is 1/8, then just a hair adjustment gets you to 1/4. 1/2 is likewise not in any obvious spot. So you might want to do your own calculations and add markings to the dial.

One note: The specs say that the recycle time is something like 3-7 seconds, but in most cases they are much better than that. Those numbers assume you are using full power with the modeling lights (and even then I don't think it was that long.) If you are doing 1/8 or 1/4 power, which is where I tend to dial them in, the cycle time is less than a second. At 1/16 it is practially instantaneous.
