I have a few tripods around my house, ranging from your basic sub $20 models, which work fine in calm, stable environments but don't hold up to the stress of weather, the environment, or travel, to a $1000 model which is truly professional quality, but is also quite heavy and not particularly fun to travel with.

I was happy to add this Vanguard Alta 235AB to my collection, because, at least in terms of specs, it nicely fills a hole between those extremes: stable and flexible enough to be useful outside the house, but also light and compact enough (when folded down) to be considered travel worthy (it weighs about 3 pounds and is about 19" long folded).

How is it in practice? I'd say very good. The real star here is the is the SBH-50 ball head that is included with the tripod. I found it adjusts very smoothly and offers an extremely good range of motion (better than the head on my $1000 tripod, in fact). The lock-downs work pretty well, too.

The legs are foam wrapped, which is nice for cold days, and, to be honest, just when carrying the thing around. The legs themselves are made of modest-grade aluminum. If there's an Achilles Heel here, it's that. They aren't bad, and they are assuredly good enough for most tasks. But if you are working in a harsh wind environment (for example), there isn't quite enough heft here to prevent a little vibration. However, for day to day use, this isn't going to be an issue.

The three legs can INDEPENDENTLY be locked at 30, 50 or 80 degrees. This helps in situations where the ground is not level. The 80 degree leg spread also makes it possible to take photos at very near-ground levels, which is a nice bonus that comes in handy more often than you might imagine.

On the whole, I like this tripod a lot. Properly priced and well built. It's not quite "professional" quality, but I'd say for most amateur and prosumer users, this will do fine.
