VANGUARD SKYBORNE 49 Camera Bag Review

These days traveling can be a bear and no one wants to lug a laptop case and a camera bag through the airport. (You'll spill your coffee and drop your Cinnabun.) Which is no doubt why Vanguard whipped up the Skyborne 53. It fits up to a 17-inch laptop (I tried it with my MacPro) and as much camera gear as most people who aren't planning on hiring a sherpa, are likely to carry.

LAPTOP notes:::
--The laptop will sit next to your back when everything is put together. It's compartment is cushioned twice. One by the structure of the backpack, and once by it's own traveling bag. (This bag zips and is certainly water resistent.)
--When waiting for airport security I'd have the laptop and it's case out so the guys can do whatever they need to do to verify it's 'safe'. Otherwise you'll hold up the line while you unzip and unzip again. After you regain your shoes you can slide everything back into place.

CAMERA STOWAGE notes:::
--This bag is HUGE! I believe most folks will be able to tote their many lenses, a tripod .AND. rain gear and a change of clothes. The whole, extremely well-padded interior is made structurally flexible with strong velcro. This means that you can carry up to 11 small lenses without having to jury-rig something, or quite a few telephoto's.
--You could store the tripod internally, or there's an external rig for it.
--Besides the big compartment, there is another shallower compartment perfect for cleaners, rags, film (if you do that), passport, cellphone etc. There is a pocket and some pen-type holder slots.

OVERALL STRUCTURE notes:::
--This is a BIG backpack with a big price, and I wouldn't suggest it for someone with a small camera. This bag is meant -- in my opinion -- for someone who wants to travel with their ipad/computer/kindle and their shutterbug gear and not drag around multiple bags. That said, I could totally see traveling with this bag as my overnight. I could fit a couple of lenses, camera, 'puter gear, makeup, brushes, nightgown and a change of casual clothes in this bag and be entirely happy. (Obviously a business suit wouldn't work well)
--This bag isn't super lightweight, but it's so well built I doubt you'll notice. Like high quality backpacks it has a belly band and padded shoulder straps. Honestly, my costly camping backpack isn't this nice. There is also thick padding covered with a breathable net all along your spine. Nice!!!

SUMMARY:::
It's ridiculous .AND. wonderful how many straps and pockets this bag has. These things just make it soooo flexible, that if it's a bag in your price range that I highly recommend you consider it. With me it's all about comfort and flexibility, and this bag has got it going on.
